Nutrition And Feeding Tips For The New Year

With the purpose of educating citizens about nutrition issues, Hospital UPR Dr. Federico Trilla provides a guide to achieve a balanced diet plan in the new year.
“The key to having a good eating plan after a season of so many excesses is in the portions you serve and consume. Therefore, it is advisable to visit a nutritionist who will help you to know the correct portions to eat and in the case of diabetics to keep the blood glucose levels under control,” explained Carmen Betancourt, a dietitian at Hospital UPR Dr. Federico Trilla.
According to the expert, “a quick and easy guide for anyone to maintain a healthy diet consists of using a nine-inch plate and dividing it into four parts: ½ of the plate for vegetables; ¼ of the plate for carbohydrates; ¼ for meats or substitutes”.
When choosing foods on the plate
- Maintain a moderate sugar intake.
- Avoid excessive alcohol consumption.
- Include fruits and vegetables on the plate.
- Avoid trans fats.

In addition, it is recommended to substitute the fruit as a dessert or snack and water as a substitute for soda or juice, since it contains no calories or sugars.
